Background of the Study
Academic writing in Nigerian universities is essential for the dissemination of research and knowledge. Syntactic clarity—the ease with which sentence structures are understood—plays a critical role in ensuring that complex ideas are conveyed accurately. This study investigates the syntactic clarity of university research papers, focusing on how Nigerian scholars construct sentences, organize arguments, and integrate academic conventions. Factors such as code-switching between indigenous languages and Standard English, as well as the influence of international academic standards, contribute to diverse syntactic practices in Nigerian research writing (Uche, 2023). By analyzing a corpus of research papers across disciplines, this research identifies common syntactic issues, such as overly complex sentence structures and ambiguity in clause relationships. The study also evaluates how these syntactic challenges affect the overall quality and accessibility of academic work. The findings will offer practical recommendations for enhancing academic writing, thereby improving knowledge dissemination and scholarly engagement (Onyema, 2024; Chima, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of syntactic clarity in academic writing, many Nigerian research papers exhibit inconsistent and ambiguous sentence constructions that hinder effective communication (Uche, 2023). The lack of standardized syntactic practices, compounded by code-switching and diverse language influences, poses significant challenges for authors and readers alike. Without systematic analysis of these issues, efforts to improve academic writing may fall short, compromising research quality and international competitiveness (Onyema, 2024; Chima, 2025).
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the syntactic clarity of Nigerian university research papers.
To identify common syntactic challenges and ambiguities.
To recommend strategies for enhancing academic writing clarity.
Research Questions
What syntactic issues are most prevalent in Nigerian academic writing?
How do these issues affect comprehension?
What measures can improve syntactic clarity in research papers?
Significance of the Study
This study contributes to enhancing academic communication by diagnosing syntactic challenges in Nigerian research papers and offering actionable recommendations. Its findings will assist educators, researchers, and academic institutions in promoting clearer, more effective scholarly writing (Uche, 2023; Onyema, 2024; Chima, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to research papers from Nigerian universities and does not cover other academic genres or informal academic discourse.
